Conversation 157: December #EmbracetheHellYeah Conversation

What makes you say “hellyeah” at the end of the day?  For any question I am asked or I ask myself, if I cannot 100% say hell yeah as my answer then it is a hell no. I want you to embrace saying yes with your whole heart and soul by enjoying every part of your authentic life. At the end of each month, I want to get more up close and personal with you all on the other side of the airwaves and share with you more about how my podcast guests are I are doing our best to #embracethehellyeah.  It is the most wonderful time of the year (cue the music) and this month I am talking about the importance and value of time over everything else in our lives.

Conversation 156:  The Story, Journey and Passion (so far) of RD2Be, Liz Davitt

“I can definitely tell a mindset difference between my undergraduate classes to my graduate classes (while taking them at the same time).  Graduate classes, I feel people are truly there to learn and grades are kind of out of the window. With undergraduate classes, people still care about grades a lot, that’s great but sometimes the learning can get lost ” Liz Davitt, RD2Be

Today’s conversation is with Liz Davitt, a dietetic student at Iowa State getting her Masters in Dietetics and Exercise Science and we also work together.

I have had the joy of working with Liz for almost 2 years. In May of 2020, she will graduate with her Masters in Dietetics and Exercise Science. Currently, she is beginning the process of determining what internships she is applying to as well as what areas of dietetics interests her. I am glad we got the opportunity to sit down and have a conversation about her journey so far.

Conversation 155:  Transitioning from Vegetarian, A Registered Dietitian Perspective with Carrie Moody, RDN

With a new documentary out and the many discussions I have had with clients and other registered dietitians about following a plant based diet, I wanted to talk a little bit more about someone who has navigated this type of lifestyle. There is so much nutrition noise when it comes to food, especially when it comes to food from animals. In today’s conversation, I talk with Carrie Moody, a registered dietitian who was a vegetarian for a long time and we discuss why she became a vegetarian, how she navigated this eating lifestyle and why she circled back to eating animal based foods. All the things she has lived and learned along the way has lead her in developing her Metabolism Reset Program. A program designed to decrease the nutrition noise, focus on your health and eating real food, from all the food groups.

Please enjoy my conversation with Carrie.

Conversation 154:  The Story, Journey and Passion of Elise Compston, RDN

“I knew I wanted to see myself in managerial positions and I wanted to see my career take off and keep going onto the next thing and for me, I had to swallow my pride and ask why that is so important?  Why is that the thing holding me back? I had to look at my priorities and what is actually important to me is not going to be the title and the money, it is the human relationships and family. ” Elise Compston, RDN

Today’s conversation is with Elise Compston, a registered dietitian who has a passion for recipe development, cooking really easy and delicious food and her beautiful family.

I have spent endless days drooling over Elise’s food on Instagram, like all her amazing nut butter creations, oatmeal bowls and sauces which all make sense after our great conversation. Elise has had a passion for recipe development early in her dietitian career and has made this passion her full-time gig along with raising two tiny humans. You will not find a more down-to-earth person who cooks from her heart and with a lot of love. Find out more about how Elise started off her career with the intention of being a theater star, meeting the love of her life during her internship and whipping up delicious food along the way.

Conversation 152:  The Story, Journey and Passion of Christine Palumbo, MBA, RDN, FAND

“Dietetics has been a perfect career for me. I have a saying I tell my family, close friends and anyone who will listen and that is “the world revolves around dietitians.” Part of it is because I am such a connector of people but also I feel as dietitians we have each others backs, we care for each other and the relationships we develop are genuine. ” Christine Palumbo, MBA, RDN, FAND

Today’s conversation is with Christine Palumbo, a registered dietitian who has a passion for serving and helping others, especially other dietitians to develop and advance their careers.

Christine and I were introduced through my production company, Ortman Productions and I couldn't have been more lucky to have this conversation. Christine has an interesting start into the field and really has pioneered her way into outstanding opportunities in clinical dietetics, being an entrepreneur who is passionate about corporate wellness, speaking, volunteering for her district, state and national dietetic academies and being a mentor to future dietitians. She has done some outstanding media work for our profession in television, print and online, including being on a panel with the late Dr. Atkins and a guest on the Oprah Winfrey Show.

Conversation 151:  The Story, Journey and Passion of Brittany Linn, RD, CDN

“For me, counseling is about putting your heart into it. You’re having a conversation with someone and they keep coming back to you for visits so you’re more involved in their life. It’s more conversation based, it’s more using your counseling skills than just giving someone a calculation. ” Brittany Linn, RD, CDN

Today’s conversation is with Brittany Linn, a registered dietitian who has a passion for nutrition counseling as a Ob-Gyn clinic dietitian.

Brittany and I were introduced through a previous podcast guest, Stephanie Dorfman #134 and I am so thrilled she connected us. Brittany has had a great career path so far. As a self proclaimed science nerd, she starting in a specialized care facility knowing her draw to clinical nutrition and then finding her passion for outpatient care, diabetes, gestational diabetes and starting her own private practice specializing in an intuitive eating approach.

“I wish there were more resources when I was a student and new dietitian about how it is ok to be imperfect. We have to take the pressure off. Conversation 147:  The Story, Journey and Passion of Erin Hendrickson, RDN, LD

“I was at a job where I loved the people I worked with, I just wasn’t fulfilled with the job role. It was one of those - if I don’t quit now, then I am going to waste all this time doing something I’m not passionate about that’s not really giving me a purpose. It was easy to quit and take that time I needed to find myself and figure out the next step.” Erin Hendrickson, RDN, LD

Today’s conversation is with Erin Hendrickson, a registered dietitian who has a passion for all things food, corporate wellness and living a more minimalistic life and sharing her journey.

When I embarked upon my #lessstuffmorelife journey a few years ago, Erin was someone I started following on social media. Erin has such a down-to-earth approach to living a life with more re-purpose through experiences and being mindful of food and all kinds of waste. She shares her experiences through the dietetic profession so far and how some crazy twist and turns has led her to this place of passion for nutrition, food and minimalism.

Conversation 143 :  The Story, Journey and Passion of Tony Stephan, RD

“I always knew I needed guidance. Even as much as I have grown with my own coach, I see so much validity in investing to profit off someone else’s mistake. You get to jump the line. There is no shortcut or secret to success but when you can invest in someone who is already doing or has don what you want to do, you just get to profit from their mistakes and you get to move the line much quicker.” Tony Stephan, RD

Today’s conversation is with Tony Stephan, a registered dietitian and business owner who has a passion for helping other dietitians and health professionals find success in their own business.

Tony and I had a great conversation today about why investing in yourself and your business is one of the keys to success. Conversation 140 :  The Story, Journey and Passion of Brittani DaSilva, MS, RD

“During my military service, I was taken back by the number of people in the military who were actually overweight. When you think about soldiers, you think about these men and women who are strong and physically fit but what I learned is that there were a lot of people who weren’t at their best health. I started to recognize these people weren’t like that because they chose it, they were like this because they were injured while serving, they had been deployed and were going through stress being separated from their families, or were experiencing PTSD after war and battling these scars inside of them while turning to food for comfort because of the sacrifices they made.” Brittani DaSilva, MS, RD

Today’s conversation is with Brittani DaSilva, a registered dietitian, nutrition coach and US Army Veteran  who wants to end the war with diets and food guilt.

Brittani and I connected after she messaged me on about being from Iowa. Brittani has such a big heart and passion for nutrition that starting during her military service. She has been all over the world, separated from family for too long and is happy to be home with her husband, living her dream by having her own private practice.

Conversation 136:  The Story, Journey and Passion of Lisa C. Andrews MEd, RD, LD

“This is my profession and I don’t want to hear dietitians bashing other dietitians. It’s not cool. I want to share the love. Today’s conversation is with Lisa Andrews, a registered dietitian from Ohio who has worked clinical, started her own business and has an awesome food pun T-shirt line.

Lisa and I connected through social media from either the love of food puns or the love of our tortie kitties, so I knew we had a connection from the start. “People that I went to grade school with sometimes say to me - Jenny, I remember you saying when you were older, you want to have a job where you can help people and help them eat well. The more I can help people, the better.” Jenny Shea Rawn MS, MPH, RD

Conversation 134:  The Story, Journey and Passion of Stephanie Dorfman, MS, RDN

“When you’re in a clinical position, you get to work with other health professional. Being in a corporate setting, I’m working with the marketing team, the culinary team, HR, IT which is nice because I get to talk about nutrition but I also get to talk/learn about other aspects of the job and the company. It would be great to add more business classes and education into our curriculum.” Stephanie Dorfman, MS, RDN

Today’s conversation is with Stephanie Dorfman, a registered dietitian who found a passion for dietetics through being an athlete and cooking with her family.

Stephanie and I connected through the best dietetics practice group, Nutrition Entrepreneurs and after connecting, I knew I wanted to learn more about her journey. Stephanie grew up an athlete and loved cooking with her family, which lead her to one of the easiest decisions she has made:  becoming a registered dietitian. She is thriving and truly enjoying working for a food service company, which lends to a lot of opportunity and variety in her job, all the while carrying a strong passion for sports nutrition.

Conversation 133:  Cocktails/Mocktails and Conversation with Carrie Moody, Nicole Rodriguez and Dave Sherotski

I feel every great conversation is had over a meal or a cocktail (or mocktail if you choose). These conversations take on their own life and travel into unique directions, which is what truly matters. Periodically, I will be putting on my party pants, pouring myself something refreshing to drink and inviting a guest to just see where the words take us. In this episode of Cocktails, Mocktails and Conversations, I invited back my favorite threesome of Carrie Moody, Nicole Rodriguez and Dave Sherotski. It’s America’s birthday and we are sharing how we celebrate and discussing our thoughts on plant-based eating.

Cheers!
