Conversation 172: May 2020 #EmbracetheHellYeah Conversation

What makes you say “hellyeah” at the end of the day?  For any question I am asked or I ask myself, if I cannot 100% say hell yeah as my answer then it is a hell no. I want you to embrace saying yes with your whole heart and soul by enjoying every part of your authentic life. At the end of each month, I want to get more up close and personal with you all on the other side of the airwaves and share with you more about how my podcast guests are I are doing our best to #embracethehellyeah. It is Skin Cancer Awareness Month, which is one of my sincere passions and I am reminding you of all the reasons to slather up with sunscreen and protect yourself.

Conversation 167:  The Story, Journey and Passion of Allison Riederer, MS, RD

“The way our dietetics education system is set up, we get a lot of support as we are becoming dietitians and then it dissipates. You don’t become a dietitian by accident.  We fight so hard to become dietitians and I think sometimes people expect their career to be the victory lap and it’s just not the way it works.” Allison Riederer, MS, RD

Today’s conversation is with Allison Riederer, a registered dietitian and founder of Root & Rise Academy who focuses on career resources and coaching for current and future registered dietitians.

Allison and I connected by being on the same cheerleading team for all registered dietitians. She has created a space to help registered dietitians navigate their careers in a positive and productive way. She almost quit the profession because she wasn’t happy with the job she was in. This lead to her working with a mentor and finding the path of teaching. She is a Dietetic Program Coordinator by day and helps other dietitians in these same circumstances by night.

Please enjoy my conversation with Allison. Connect with Allison by email and on her Root and Rise Academy website.

Conversation 166:  The Story, Journey and Passion of Jennifer McGurk, RDN, CEDRD-S

“Part of my passion is having other professionals in my private practice who are going through their own eating disorder recovery and I love working with them. I love working with nutrition students, social workers, psychologists and other registered dietitians are sometimes my clients. It’s so great to be able to say to them - you are not broken.” Jennifer McGurk, RDN, CEDRD-S

Today’s conversation is with Jennifer McGurk, a registered dietitian and entrepreneur who has a passion for supporting and educating other registered dietitians on business and intuitive eating.

Jennifer and I connected over a passion for podcasts. I noticed just recently she released her podcast called Pursuing Private Practice and I was so happy to see another dietitian in this awesome podcast space.  Jennifer is doing great things for the dietetics profession by teaching dietitians how to run a business based on her own experiences, challenges and successes. Jennifer is also a Certified Eating Disorders Registered Dietitian who specializes in the Intuitive Eating approach and is focusing on working with dietitians who want to use this in their private practice.

Please enjoy my conversation with Jennifer.

COVID Cocktails/Mocktails and Conversation with Carrie Moody, Nicole Rodriguez and Dave Sherotski

I feel every great conversation is had over a meal or a cocktail (or mocktail if you choose). These conversations take on their own life and travel into unique directions, which is what truly matters. Periodically, I will be putting on my party pants, pouring myself something refreshing to drink and inviting my favorite guests just to  see where the words take us. In this episode of Cocktails, Mocktails and Conversations, I invited back my favorite threesome of Carrie Moody, Nicole Rodriguez and Dave Sherotski. It is a crazy time in the world right now with the COVID pandemic, so we just needed a cocktail to converse about what is going on, how to stay positive and what we are learning through this experience.

Cheers!

Conversation 162:  The Story, Journey and Passion of Rita Saeed, MS, RDN

“I have been off the (social media) grid awhile now, because it became so exhausting, especially when it wasn’t fun anymore. I’m the type of person who really follows her heart and I really follow my passion and my intuition. If something doesn’t feel fun for me anymore and it feels more like a chore and I’m not getting joy out of it, I simply need to take a step back and re-evaluate what the purpose is.” Rita Saeed, MS, RDN

Today’s conversation is with Rita Saeed,  a registered dietitian who works in the clinical area of dietetics but knows there is something more out there for her professionally.

Rita and I connected by social media because she was having a hard time with where she fit in as a registered dietitian. As she finished her internship and entered the career force, Rita felt she was losing her passion for the profession and questioning why she became a dietitian in the first place. Rita shares a personal side and talks about the parts of dietitian life we all experience. She also shares some great insight to working through all the changes of becoming a new dietitian.

Conversation 161:  The Story, Journey and Passion of Laura Koch, MS, RD, LMNT

“One of the hardest things I was told when I started my job was our patients are not going to get better. They are either going to die or their are going to get a transplant. That was one thing that was a bit hard to come to grips with. I think for me, being able to help people maintain a good quality of life for the time they do have and managing this really difficult disease is really rewarding.” Laura Koch, MS, RD, LMNT

Today’s conversation is with Laura Koch,  a registered dietitian who found dietetics as a second career and has discovered a passion for renal nutrition.

Laura and I connected this spring at the Nebraska Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics annual meeting and I am very glad she introduced herself. Her story starts out with going to college without a clear outline of what her passion was and working in an entirely different field of insurance. Along the way, she realized she had an interest in nutrition, pursued her degree and is now working for a dialysis clinic. Laura sheds some light on this area of nutrition and how she is finding it to be an area of dietetics to be rewarding.

Please enjoy my conversation with Laura.

Conversation 160:  The Story, Journey and Passion of Alice Figueroa, MPH, RD, LD

“To be a really empowered dietitian and someone who works in the health industry, we all need to become aware of the issues going on in our community so we can become advocates. We do have a science background and we are the authority when it comes to food safety and nutrition. I think it’s really important for RD’s to become well-rounded and learn about the needs of our communities. ” Alice Figueroa, MPH, RD, LD

Today’s conversation is with Alice Figueroa, a registered dietitian who created her own path into dietetics by combining her passion for public health, policy and nutrition.

Alice and I were connected through my previous podcast guest, Nicole Rodriguez because they did their internship together and I am so glad she did. Alice is one of those dietitians we all should get to know because of her deeply rooted passion for health advocacy both here in the United States and globally. She is from Guatemala and trips with her family early in her life, opened her eyes to many faults in basic human rights like food and clean water. Alice shares many of her experiences so far, insights on how policy affects all dietitians and the current project she is working on going back to her family's roots. This is a conversation you must make time for.

Please enjoy my conversation with Alice.

Conversation 158:  The Story, Journey and Passion of Moe Schlachter MS, RD, LD, CDE

“The beauty of our profession is sometimes we’re talking about really serious illnesses and diseases and the mood in the room can be a little grim - but sometimes we get to connect with our clients and back to memories of their mom, their grandma and their family meals and dinners to visit a time in the past,  which is really special. It sets our profession apart.” Moe Schlachter MS, RD, LD, CDE

Today’s conversation is with Moe Schlachter, a registered dietitian who started off in the business world, went to culinary school and became a chef and is now running his own nutrition private practice.

I am not on Linkedin very much but there was one day when I was and came across Moe. We all know there are not many male dietitians in our profession, so I am always intrigued when I come across one and one who has his own business. Moe is an amazing human doing amazing things currently and throughout his lifetime so far. His story is very unique as he started in the business world, went to Israel for culinary school, being a Chef in New York City,  and then a few years later going back to school for dietetics after a conversation and encouragement from a friend. He is starting year 3 of his private practice, Houston Family Nutrition, in a community he loves.

Please enjoy my conversation with Moe.
